'Challenge! Learning Man' and History Class with Jeong Myungseop
Jungnang-gu in Seoul is expanding its hands-on humanities programs for youth and citizens at the Mangwoo Historical and Cultural Park. Mangwoo Historical and Cultural Park is a prominent historical site in Seoul, where more than 60 modern and contemporary figures, including independence activists and cultural artists, are laid to rest. It serves as a venue for humanities education where visitors can experience both nature and history.
This year, in collaboration with organizations such as the Korea National Trust, a variety of experiential programs based on historical interpretation have been prepared. Notably, "Challenge! Learning Man," where participants explore the memorial sites of notable figures in the park while solving history quizzes and missions, and "Now, the Door to Time Travel Opens," a history class with historical novelist Jeong Myungseop, will be offered.
"Challenge! Learning Man" is a game-based history learning program in which participants form teams of three to five and visit the memorial sites of key figures in the park to solve problems. Since its launch in 2013, the program has expanded its target audience this year to include families and general groups, thereby enhancing intergenerational communication and the effectiveness of history education.
The "History Class with Jeong Myungseop" is a participatory program where participants first experience the park virtually using VR, then share stories about historical figures with the author, and finally visit the actual memorial sites to engage in writing activities.
In addition, a range of programs for various age groups are offered on an ongoing basis, including park tours with local cultural interpreters from Jungnang, humanities lectures, and astronomical observation sessions. Most programs can be registered for through the Mangwoo Historical and Cultural Park website or the Seoul Public Service Reservation System.
Ryu Kyunggi, head of Jungnang-gu District Office, stated, "Mangwoo Historical and Cultural Park is one of Seoul's representative spaces where people can walk, relax, and experience history and culture," adding, "I hope these programs will provide a meaningful and valuable experience not only for youth but also for families visiting together."
