KOSPI Surges Past 2,740 to Hit Yearly High... Optimism Grows Over "Korea Discount" Resolution

KOSDAQ Also Rises More Than 1%

On June 4, the KOSPI started in the 2,730 range, breaking its yearly high and showing strong performance. The KOSDAQ is also up by more than 1%.

As of 9:03 a.m. on this day, the KOSPI was at 2,743.10, up 1.64% from the previous trading day. The index opened at 2,737.92, a 1.44% increase from the previous session, and extended its gains. Foreign investors led the upward trend by purchasing 71.8 billion won, while individuals and institutions sold 23.3 billion won and 47.6 billion won, respectively.


By sector, securities posted the highest increase at 3.05%. This is interpreted as reflecting expectations for the "Korea Discount" (undervaluation of the Korean stock market) resolution pledge following the launch of the Lee Jaemyung administration. In addition, electrical and electronics (2.50%), insurance (2.22%), finance (2.13%), chemicals (1.92%), and machinery and equipment (1.78%) are also seeing gains. Only electric and gas (-2.67%) and transportation equipment and parts (-0.55%) sectors are declining.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, major semiconductor stocks such as Samsung Electronics (1.23%) and SK Hynix (5.66%) are rising, supported by the strength of U.S. semiconductor stocks. Samsung Biologics (0.39%), LG Energy Solution (2.46%), KB Financial Group (1.40%), Hyundai Motor (0.98%), and Celltrion (0.87%) are also on the rise. In contrast, Hanwha Aerospace (-1.68%) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (-2.57%) are falling.


At the same time, the KOSDAQ was at 748.39, up 1.09% from the previous trading day. It opened at 749.13, up 1.19% from the previous session, but then retreated slightly. Foreign investors and institutions are net buyers of 6.1 billion won and 8.2 billion won, respectively, while individuals are selling 14 billion won.


Most KOSDAQ sectors are also on the rise. Finance (3.39%), textiles and apparel (3.39%), electrical and electronics (1.96%), IT services (1.95%), and machinery and equipment (1.90%) are leading the gains. Sectors that are declining include pharmaceuticals (-2.52%) and metals (-0.16%).


Among the top 10 KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization, except for HLB (-1.89%) and ABL Bio (-3.22%), all are rising, including Alteogen (9.43%), Ecopro BM (4.27%), Ecopro (5.34%), Rainbow Robotics (2.60%), PharmaResearch (3.80%), Rigakem Bio (0.17%), Hugel (0.59%), and Classys (0.52%).
