Ministry of Land to Support Green Remodeling for 261 Public Buildings

Selected as "Signature Projects" for Best Practices...
Support Doubled

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will support "green remodeling" for 261 public buildings across the country this year. The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption by introducing high-efficiency equipment, with the goal of cutting carbon emissions in the building sector.

The ministry announced on June 4 that "from April 14 to May 2, a total of 796 buildings were submitted during the application period," and "through the review of the Public Building Green Remodeling Review Committee, a total of 261 buildings were selected as the final recipients of support."

This year, the scope of eligible buildings was expanded. In addition to the existing focus on senior centers, public health centers, and medical facilities, other welfare facilities, educational facilities, and public facilities were newly included.

By region, 42 buildings (16.1%) are in the Seoul metropolitan area, and 219 buildings (83.9%) are in non-metropolitan areas. By type of use, senior centers accounted for the largest share with 187 buildings (71.6%), followed by public health centers (37 buildings), libraries (12 buildings), other welfare facilities such as senior, disabled, and child welfare centers (15 buildings), other educational facilities such as lifelong learning centers and women's centers (2 buildings), and other public facilities such as village halls (5 buildings). Among these, 6 buildings were selected as "signature projects." These will be developed as exemplary regional cases and can receive up to twice the budget compared to general projects.

The project is carried out based on applications from public institutions and local governments. The Ministry conducts on-site inspections and comprehensively reviews the potential for energy savings and implementation plans before deciding on support. Since the project began in 2020, a total of 3,470 public buildings have received support, including daycare centers (1,255 buildings), public health centers (1,330 buildings), medical facilities (131 buildings), libraries (38 buildings), and senior centers (716 buildings). Project funding is provided through a matching system depending on the region: for Seoul and central government agencies, 50% comes from the national budget, while for local governments and regions outside Seoul, 70% is covered by the national budget.

Hong Sungjun, Director of the Green Architecture Division at the Ministry, said, "Green remodeling is a key tool for improving building energy performance and reducing carbon emissions." He added, "We hope this project will contribute to achieving the national greenhouse gas reduction targets in the building sector and strengthen the capabilities of local industries participating in the project, leading to the voluntary spread of green remodeling in the private sector as well."

Detailed information about the public building green remodeling project can be found on the Green Remodeling Creation Center website.
