Gwangju and Jeonnam Voter Turnout Exceeds 70% by 1 p.m.... Jeonnam Ranks First, Gwangju Third

Jeonnam Records 74.1%, Gwangju 71.6% Voter Turnout

As of 1:00 p.m. on June 3, the main voting day for the 21st presidential election, both Jeonnam and Gwangju regions recorded voter turnout rates exceeding 70%. The national average turnout was 62.1%.

According to the National Election Commission, the voter turnout in Jeonnam was 74.1%, the highest among the 17 cities and provinces nationwide at the same time. Out of 1,559,431 eligible voters in Jeonnam, 1,156,180 participated (263,691 in main voting, 892,489 in early and mail-in voting). This figure is 5.1 percentage points higher than the turnout at the same time during the 20th presidential election (69.0%).


By city and county, turnout rates were as follows: Gurye-gun 79.7%, Sinan-gun 79.5%, Wando-gun 79.1%, Jindo-gun 78.7%, Jangheung-gun 78.4%, Goheung-gun 78.3%, and Haenam-gun 78.0%, indicating high participation across most areas of Jeonnam. During the early voting held on May 29-30, Jeonnam also recorded the highest early voting turnout in its history at 56.50%.


The voter turnout in Gwangju was 71.6%, the third highest nationwide. Out of 1,194,471 eligible voters in Gwangju, 855,276 cast their ballots (226,493 in main voting, 628,783 in early and mail-in voting). This represents an increase of 3.4 percentage points compared to the turnout at the same time during the 20th presidential election (68.2%).


By district in Gwangju, turnout rates were: Nam-gu 73.2%, Dong-gu 72.8%, Buk-gu 72.0%, Seo-gu 71.1%, and Gwangsan-gu 70.3%. The early voting turnout was 52.12%.


On this day, main voting is being conducted at a total of 806 polling stations in Jeonnam and 357 polling stations in Gwangju. Voting will continue until 8:00 p.m., and the locations of polling stations can be checked on the National Election Commission website or through portal sites.


To vote, a government-issued ID containing date of birth and a photo, such as a resident registration card, driver's license, passport, or mobile identification, is required.
