On-Site Inspection of Ramps and Wheelchair Access Routes
Seo-gu District in Gwangju has completed the installation of 68 polling stations within its jurisdiction ahead of the 21st presidential election and has conducted on-site inspections. At the same time, the district is actively running community-based campaigns to encourage residents' interest and participation in voting.
Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijeong, Gwangju Superintendent of Education Lee Jungseon, Dong-gu District Mayor Lim Taek, Seo-gu District Mayor Kim Igang, Nam-gu District Mayor Kim Byeongnae, Buk-gu District Mayor Moon In, and Gwangsan-gu District Mayor Park Byeonggyu held a press conference in the city hall briefing room on the morning of the 2nd, urging participation in the 21st presidential election voting. According to Seo-gu District on the 2nd, the district carefully inspected all 68 polling stations that afternoon, checking ramps, wheelchair access routes, dedicated restrooms, and the height of voting booths to ensure accessibility and convenience for people with mobility challenges. On election day, June 3, the district plans to deploy 685 people, including election staff, election supervisors, civil servants, and residents, to the polling stations to ensure the smooth operation of the election.
Community campaigns that encourage resident participation are also drawing attention. Seo-gu District produced the cover of its June newsletter with the message "Let's Vote Together" and distributed 35,000 copies to apartment complexes and multi-use facilities.
Additionally, banners and posters with election schedules and information were attached to garbage trucks and bus shelters throughout the district, so that residents encounter election information as part of their daily lives. The voting participation sculpture installed in front of the Seo-gu District Office is being used as a unique photo spot where public officials and residents take commemorative photos.
The voluntary participation of public officials is also notable. Seo-gu District is running a "Public Official Spirit, Lighting the Future of Seo-gu" voting certification photo challenge on its internal bulletin board, promoting a culture of voting among public officials, their families, and acquaintances. In addition, the district is actively providing election information through administrative phone messages, electronic bulletin boards at administrative welfare centers, outdoor promotional boards, and social media channels.
Previously, last month, MZ generation public officials visited the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery on the anniversary of the 5·18 Democratization Movement and held a voting participation campaign in front of the Gate of Democracy, holding a banner that read, "A Boy Comes to May Gwangju! The MZ Generation Goes to the Polling Station!"
In the district cafeteria, a special 5·18 Gimbap meal was served to deliver a voting message. At the May 17 Democratic Peace March event, a large banner with the message "Let’s Carry on the May Spirit through Voting" attracted attention.
In addition, voting flag and voting bread events were held with participation from Korea’s master artisans Ahn Yuseong and Ma Okcheon, and the voting participation campaign was actively promoted with the involvement of volunteers, youth, and marriage migrant women, among various groups.
Shin Jin, head of the Residents’ Autonomy Division, stated, "Voting is the most powerful means of practicing everyday democracy," and added, "We will continue to expand a citizen-centered culture of autonomy through creative and participatory activities involving diverse groups."
