Incheon City Signs Agreement with 10 Medical Institutions and Organizations for Integrated Support of Cancer Survivors

On June 2, the Incheon Metropolitan Government signed a business agreement with 10 local medical institutions and organizations, including the Incheon Cancer Survivor Integrated Support Center, to provide integrated management for cancer survivors.

The city plans to establish a cooperative system with the participating institutions and organizations, and to carry out joint projects aimed at enhancing cancer survivors' self-management abilities and supporting their reintegration into society.

Each institution and organization will refer cancer survivors who require ongoing care to the Incheon Cancer Survivor Integrated Support Center, and the center will offer a variety of programs and counseling services to promote health improvement and facilitate social reintegration.

This agreement is the first case in the nation where the public and private sectors are jointly promoting an integrated cancer survivor support project. Three advanced general hospitals?Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Inha University Hospital, and Incheon St. Mary's Hospital?participated, along with four regional responsible medical institutions?Na-Eun Hospital, Incheon Sejong Hospital, Incheon Medical Center, and Incheon Red Cross Hospital?and two medical organizations?the Incheon Medical Association and the Korean Medical Women's Association Incheon Branch.

Incheon Mayor Yoo Jungbok stated, "Life after cancer treatment is just as important as the treatment itself," adding, "We will provide support so that patients and their caregivers do not have to cope with anxiety and depression alone."

Meanwhile, in 2020, the Ministry of Health and Welfare designated Gachon University Gil Medical Center as the Incheon Regional Cancer Survivor Integrated Support Center, providing a variety of integrated support programs to survivors who have completed cancer treatment, regardless of the hospital where they received treatment.

These programs include intensive counseling by nurses and social workers, physical health programs such as strength training and nutrition and dietary education, psychological support such as support groups and art and music therapy, and information provision to support return to work.
