Former President Moon Watches "Sea Tiger": "We Must Create a Safer Korea"

"The Government Displayed Cowardice During the Sewol Ferry Disaster"

The film distributor Young Brothers announced on June 2 that former President Moon Jae-in and his wife attended a screening of the movie "Sea Tiger" held in Busan on May 31.

Former President Moon Watches "Sea Tiger": "We Must Create a Safer Korea"

This film, directed by Jung Yoonchul, depicts the journey of diver Kyungsoo (played by Lee Jihoon) as he overcomes pain and returns to his family. It is based on the novel "It's a Lie" by Kim Takwhan, which in turn is inspired by the true story of the late diver Kim Kwanhong, who participated in the search for missing persons during the Sewol ferry disaster.

After watching the film, former President Moon took the microphone and said, "Even without recreating the actual scene of the disaster, the film delivers an incredible sense of immersion and empathy. I hope many people will watch it."

He continued, "The Sewol ferry disaster raised the profound question of 'What is a nation?' At the time, the government not only failed to rescue the children while they were still alive, but also demonstrated incompetence and irresponsibility during the rescue process, and even shifted the blame onto civilian divers in a cowardly manner," he criticized.

He added, "We must create a country that puts the safety and lives of its people first. We need to build trust in making Korea a safer nation. In that sense, I believe 'Sea Tiger' is a very timely film."
