2.6 Billion Won Invested in Wildfire Prevention and Reforestation Management
Fire-Resistant Protective Forests to Be Established Around Baegyangsa and Pilam Seowon
Jangseong County in Jeonnam announced on June 1 that it will invest 2.6 billion won in a "customized forest management project for enhanced forest disaster resilience." This initiative is aimed at reducing wildfire damage caused by the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality.

The project consists of five categories: wildfire prevention forest management, reforestation site management, large tree management, young tree management, and public benefit forest management for fine dust reduction. The total project area will cover approximately 1,000 hectares (ha).
Among these, Jangseong County will focus on wildfire prevention forest management as its core project. The county plans to create forests resilient to wildfires by adjusting tree density and removing forest debris. In particular, it will concentrate on managing pine forests, which are vulnerable to wildfires, and will proactively block wildfire spread routes through pruning and thinning operations.
Fire-resistant tree species will be planted to establish protective forests around major temples and cultural heritage sites, including the thousand-year-old Baegyangsa Temple and Pilam Seowon, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The reforestation site management project will be carried out on 650 ha, which is more than half of the total area. Intensive management will be provided to ensure the healthy growth of large trees such as cypress, sawtooth oak, and tulip tree. For young trees aged one to three years, pruning, weeding, and vine removal will be conducted simultaneously.
Public benefit forests with fine dust reduction effects will be maintained to maximize their inherent forest functions.
