Namyangju City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Joo Gwangdeok) announced on May 30 that it has finalized the establishment of the "2035 Namyangju City Environmental Plan" aimed at responding to the climate crisis and creating a sustainable ecological city, and has begun the final approval process.

Namyangju City has established the highest-level statutory environmental plan for the region, reflecting local characteristics and based on the consistency with the National Comprehensive Environmental Plan and Gyeonggi Province's Environmental Plan. The city has set long-term goals through 2035 for the entire city and its surrounding areas.

To develop the plan, the city formed and operated the "Namyangju City Environmental Plan Establishment Council," chaired by the Deputy Mayor. In addition, the city held public hearings for citizens and underwent a review by the Environmental Policy Committee. The final draft is scheduled to be submitted in June for approval by Gyeonggi Province.

This environmental plan, under the vision of "Creating an Eco-City Where Nature and Citizens Coexist," consists of 60 strategic projects across 11 sectors. It comprehensively covers all aspects of the living environment, including air and fine dust, integrated water management, resource circulation, environmental health, and response to climate change. A total of 3.2872 trillion won (an annual average of 273.9 billion won) is planned to be invested through 2035.

Key strategic projects include expanding green spaces within living areas where citizens and nature coexist, establishing a Namyangju-style nonpoint source pollution master plan, supporting renewable energy convergence projects, and strengthening environmental education to respond to the climate crisis and environmental disasters.

Mayor Joo Gwangdeok stated, "This environmental plan is a blueprint for Namyangju City to move toward becoming a sustainable city and a comprehensive strategy to proactively respond to climate change and the environmental crisis. We will faithfully implement detailed projects in each sector to improve the quality of life for our citizens, actively respond to the global climate crisis, and take concrete steps to create an ecological and sustainable city that citizens can truly experience."
