Following Jukjeon Station and the Labor Welfare Center, the Third Shelter in the City
Equipped with Air Conditioning, Heating, and Various Rest and Convenience Facilities
Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on May 30 that it will establish the "Mobile Workers' Shelter No. 3" in Gugal-dong, Giheung District, to protect the rights and improve the welfare of mobile workers such as delivery drivers, couriers, and designated drivers.
Yongin City established the first "Mobile Workers' Shelter No. 1" near Jukjeon Station in Suji District for the first time in 2023. The city will set up the third shelter for mobile workers on city-owned land in Gugal-dong, Giheung District. Provided by Yongin City
The new shelter will be built as a 27-square-meter temporary structure on city-owned land at 648 Gugal-dong, near the Giheung Taxi Shelter. Mobile workers will be able to use both the public restroom and the parking lot at the Giheung Taxi Shelter. The city explained that the site is highly accessible, as it is adjacent to Giheung District Office, Giheung Station on the Suin-Bundang Line, and Gangnam University Station on the Yongin Light Rail Transit.
Inside the shelter, air conditioning and heating will be installed to allow mobile workers to rest safely from heat waves and cold spells. Additional amenities such as sofas, tables, water dispensers for hot and cold water, and mobile phone chargers will also be provided.
Access to the shelter will be granted through an authentication system using either a personal credit card or the simple payment (Pay) function on a mobile phone. To enhance security, the city will install CCTV cameras both inside and outside the shelter, as well as security CCTV and emergency bells within a 50-meter radius.
The city plans to complete construction of the shelter by the end of June, conduct a trial operation, and officially open it in July. During the trial period, user feedback will be collected to continuously improve the operation and amenities of the shelter.
Previously, the city established the first simple-type shelter near Jukjeon Station in 2023, and the second base-type shelter inside the Yongin City Labor Welfare Center last year. Both shelters are currently operated by the Yongin branch of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions under a consignment agreement.
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, "Mobile workers need to be able to rest comfortably in a pleasant environment in order to work safely at their workplaces. We will ensure that the shelter is established without any setbacks so that mobile workers can use it conveniently and avoid exhaustion during the upcoming summer heat."
