Gijang County in Busan to Intensively Crack Down on Unpaid Automobile Fines with "License Plate Seizure" Starting in June

Gijang County (Governor Jung Jongbok) will launch an intensive crackdown on the "seizure of license plates" for vehicles with unpaid automobile-related fines starting next month.

On May 29, Gijang County announced that it will begin strict on-site inspections in June to accelerate the collection of the continuously increasing amount of unpaid automobile fines.

The crackdown targets vehicles with a total unpaid fine of 300,000 won or more for automobile-related violations such as illegal parking, failure to purchase mandatory insurance, or delayed inspections, where 60 days have passed since the date of delinquency.

Gijang County plans to operate a dedicated seizure team and strengthen inspections in areas with a high concentration of vehicles, such as public parking lots and apartment complexes. For vehicles subject to enforcement, license plates will be removed on the spot, and the plates will only be returned once all fines are fully paid.

A county official stated, "Automobile fines are not merely administrative penalties, but valuable resources for expanding community infrastructure and improving resident welfare," emphasizing, "Through strong measures such as license plate seizure, we will work to establish a culture of faithful tax payment and enhance fiscal soundness."

In parallel with this crackdown, Gijang County will also conduct promotional activities to encourage voluntary payment by delinquent vehicle owners and plans to implement balanced tax administration to minimize inconvenience for residents.
