Secretary of State Marco Rubio Announces Policy via Social Media
On May 28 (local time), U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States will revoke visas for Chinese students who are either linked to the Chinese Communist Party or are studying in key strategic fields.
According to Bloomberg News, Secretary Rubio stated in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the visa cancellations will target "students who are connected to the Chinese Communist Party or who are studying in major strategic fields." However, he did not provide specific criteria or further details.
This measure comes as the Trump administration is moving to strengthen monitoring and screening of foreign nationals enrolled at U.S. universities.
Secretary Rubio had previously instructed all U.S. embassies worldwide to suspend student visa interviews. Bloomberg News added that this is seen as a signal that the second Trump administration is considering tightening screening procedures, including reviewing applicants' social media accounts.
