An incumbent police officer suspected of receiving billions of won in bribes in exchange for covering up a case has been arrested.
On May 28, Judge Nam Sejin, who is in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, conducted a pretrial detention hearing for Jeong, an inspector at Uijeongbu Police Station, who is facing charges including official secrets leakage and bribery. After the hearing, the judge issued an arrest warrant, citing concerns about destruction of evidence and risk of flight.
Inspector Jeong, who is currently serving as a team leader at Uijeongbu Police Station, is accused of receiving billions of won in bribes in 2020 in exchange for covering up a case. Previously, on May 26, the prosecution urgently arrested Inspector Jeong and conducted a search and seizure of his office and other locations.
The prosecution reportedly believes that Inspector Jeong may have passed the bribes he received for covering up the case to his superiors, and is continuing the investigation under this suspicion.
