The political scene in Yeonggwang County, South Jeolla Province, has been stirred by Lee Nakyeon, Senior Advisor of the New Future Democratic Party, declaring his support for Kim Munsu, the People Power Party's presidential candidate. He faced strong criticism, with some accusing him of being at the center of the "politics of betrayal."

The Democratic Party Yeonggwang Regional Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Committee) issued an urgent statement on the 28th, urging, "Senior Advisor Lee Nakyeon must stop forming alliances with forces that condone insurrection and cease betraying his hometown of Yeonggwang and the democratic camp."

The Committee stated, "Senior Advisor Lee Nakyeon has ultimately engaged in discussions with Kim Munsu, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, about forming a joint government for national unity, placing himself at the forefront of an anti-democratic alliance. We feel devastated and angry about this fact. He was once the pride of his hometown Yeonggwang and a symbol of the democratic reform camp. He was respected as someone who defended democracy alongside Presidents Kim Daejung, Roh Moo-hyun, and Moon Jaein."

The Committee further emphasized, "Now, he has abandoned the spirit of the Democratic Party, trampled on the will of the people of his hometown Yeonggwang, and stood at the center of the politics of betrayal, turning against the reform camp that nurtured him."

The Committee also stated, "This decision is a clear act of defection and political betrayal against the people of Yeonggwang County and South Jeolla Province who once supported him. Lee Nakyeon no longer has the right to speak about democracy or the justification to represent his hometown. He will be remembered as a turncoat."

The Committee commented, "Senior Advisor Lee Nakyeon has already shaken the democratic camp several times, including refusing to accept the Democratic Party's primary results and fomenting internal division during the last presidential and parliamentary elections. The reality that he has now joined hands with pro-insurrection forces is the result of unrestrained ambition that has abandoned even the minimum conscience."

The Committee concluded, "Through this presidential election, we will judge the insurrectionary political alliances and anti-democratic opportunistic politics. We call on the people of Yeonggwang County and South Jeolla Province to deliver judgment through their votes on the pro-insurrection forces and Senior Advisor Lee Nakyeon, who sided with them."
