Aiming to Protect the Inland Water Ecosystem
and Increase Fishermen's Income
Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 28th that it had released 89,000 eel fry into Pyeongtaek Lake and Namyang Lake, which are inland waters within the city, in order to protect the inland water ecosystem and increase the income of local fishermen.

The eel fry released this time are high-quality juveniles, each over 10 centimeters in length, that have passed both disease and genetic tests conducted by the Gyeonggi-do Marine and Fisheries Resources Research Institute.
Eels are a migratory fish species that hatch in the waters near the Philippines, swim upstream to inland waters in countries such as Korea and Japan to grow, and then return to the sea to spawn. In particular, due to their high market price, eels are considered one of the most preferred fish species among fishermen.
An official from Pyeongtaek City stated, "We will continue to actively gather opinions from fishermen and implement customized fisheries projects, including the development of alternative fish species in response to climate change."
