Yongin City Approves Construction of 61,788 sqm R&D Center with 9 Buildings, Completion Set for January 2027
Mayor Lee Sangil: "We Will Actively Provide Administrative Support for Corporate Growth"
Tokyo Electron (TEL), the world's third-largest company in the semiconductor equipment sector, will begin construction of a research and development (R&D) center in Yongin in July, with a total floor area of 61,788 square meters.
The city of Yongin announced on May 28 that it has recently approved the construction of 'TEL Technology Center Korea-Y,' the R&D center of Tokyo Electron Korea, within the Wonsam General Industrial Complex in Jukneung-ri, Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu.
Accordingly, TEL Korea plans to begin construction of the center in July and aims to complete it by January 2027.
The center will be built on a 45,069 square meter site within the Wonsam General Industrial Complex, with a total floor area of 61,788 square meters. The company plans to construct a total of nine buildings, including one evaluation building (FAB) with an area of 28,000 square meters, one office building, a daycare center, a parking tower, and seven ancillary structures.
Previously, TEL Korea purchased the industrial complex land in January last year. In March of the same year, the company applied for approval to change the complex plan, including the installation of a development building and a change of business type for the construction of the R&D center. The city approved this application within three months.
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, "In order to enhance the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry, where speed is critical, we introduced rapid administrative services. As a result, we were able to quickly complete the construction permit through prior consultation with relevant agencies. We will continue to actively support many companies so that they can achieve outstanding results."
Meanwhile, the Wonsam General Industrial Complex, where TEL Korea's R&D center will be located, is being developed with a total area of 108,919 square meters. Nearby, the 'Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex' is being established, which will house SK hynix's semiconductor production line. Once completed, these developments are expected to form a key pillar of the semiconductor ecosystem in the Yongin area.
