KCNA Cites North Korean Research Institute Document
China Also Criticizes Golden Dome Initiative
"Escalation of Arms Race"
North Korea has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to establish the "Golden Dome" missile defense system, claiming it is a "space nuclear war scenario."
Bloomberg News reported that the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) cited a document issued by a research institute under North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 27th, delivering this statement.
The document described the U.S. missile defense program as "the height of arrogance, self-righteousness, and unilateralism," and criticized the United States for "desperately clinging to the militarization of space under the claim that it must dominate space to secure victory in future wars."
President Trump recently pledged to have the Golden Dome defense system operational before the end of his term. The system aims to defend the U.S. mainland from a variety of threats, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, and high-performance cruise missiles. However, the system's core technologies?especially the concept of space-based interceptors?have yet to be proven.
China has also expressed concern about the Golden Dome initiative. At a regular briefing on the 21st, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that the U.S. Golden Dome plan "violates the principle of peaceful use advocated by the Outer Space Treaty, increases the risks of the weaponization of space and an arms race, and will undermine international security and military systems."
Meanwhile, President Trump stated last month that he "plans to contact North Korea at an appropriate time," emphasizing that he maintains a very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. During his first term, President Trump suspended or scaled back some joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States following a summit with Kim, and he has also indicated a willingness to resume dialogue between North Korea and the United States during his current term.
