The National Folk Museum announced on May 26 that it will hold the seasonal event "Beginning of Summer: Dano" in celebration of Dano (May 31).
According to the National Folk Museum, on May 29, there will be a demonstration and hands-on experience of washing hair with iris water, and on May 31, the museum will offer programs featuring experiences of Dano-related seasonal customs and special performances. On May 31, the National Folk Museum Paju will welcome visitors with the unique features of its open storage facility.
Dano (端午) refers to the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The character "Dan" (端) means "first," and "O" (午) refers to "five," indicating the fifth day. Traditionally, this day has been considered one of the most important holidays of the year, as it was believed to be the day when yang energy is at its peak. Many customs to ward off evil spirits or to pray for good fortune have been practiced on this day.
Iris is a plant commonly found in Korea. It has long been believed that washing hair with water boiled with iris leaves and roots prevents hair from turning white and has the power to ward off evil spirits. In line with this tradition, the National Folk Museum will hold a demonstration of washing hair with iris water in the front yard of Ochon House inside the museum on May 29.
On May 31, a "Dano Ssireum Wrestling Tournament" will be held in collaboration with the Korea Ssireum Association. Visitors can try on a wrestling belt, learn basic ssireum techniques from the athletes, and participate directly in the tournament to test their strength and skills. There will also be a performance titled "Hwanghaedo North Gut: Dano Gut by Shaman Jeong Geumnyeo - Suri Suri Masurit," which, in the form of a shamanic ritual, aims to drive away misfortune and invite blessings.
Additionally, following the tradition of the king presenting fans to his officials on Dano, the National Folk Museum will distribute "Dano Fans" on May 31. There will also be opportunities to stamp Dano talismans to ward off bad luck, make Jangmyeongru bracelets for health and longevity, and taste Surichwi-tteok, a seasonal rice cake associated with Dano.
At the National Folk Museum Paju, guided tours featuring Dano-themed explanations by volunteer docents will be offered twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
Detailed information about the events and how to participate can be found on the National Folk Museum website.
