On the 25th, at a press conference held at the Democratic Party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, Lee said, "I will break the vicious cycle created by politics of confrontation and conflict." He added, "I believe that building a true Republic of Korea, where the people prosper and the economy grows, is the way to overcome those forces behind the rebellion."
Lee emphasized, "The shortcut to restoring democracy destroyed by the rebellion is to acknowledge each other beyond ideology and factions, and to revive a culture of coexistence and communication through dialogue and compromise." He continued, "I, Lee Jae Myung, who knows better than anyone the harm caused by political retaliation through abuse of power, am the right person to end the era of outdated ideologies and the politics of ruthless division, am I not?"
He also expressed his sincere apologies to those who have suffered and been oppressed, and who are still struggling, simply because they were associated with him or even because of rumors of being close to him over the past several years.
Lee presented specific measures to strengthen the democratic system. He said, "I will strengthen parliamentary control over martial law, limit the president's veto power, introduce a system for the National Assembly to recommend the prime minister, and establish a parliamentary consent procedure for appointments to the prosecution, police, and the Korea Communications Commission." He added, "Democracy will be solidified only when the principles of checks and balances function properly."
He also stressed the importance of communication with the people. He pledged to implement a merit-based personnel system by revitalizing the 'People's Recommendation System,' which hires talented individuals recommended by the public. In addition, he promised to establish a 'People's Participation Digital Platform' and to form 'issue-specific public consensus committees' to seek broad social compromise on contentious issues.
Lee said, "If one hour of the president's time is worth as much as 52 million hours of our people, imagine how much hope a single public official can create." He continued, "The protagonist of this presidential election is not me, Lee Jae Myung, but you, the sovereign people."
He encouraged voter participation, saying, "From last Tuesday (the 20th) until today, overseas voting is underway, and in four days, early voting (May 29-30) will begin." He added, "You must vote for the people to win on June 3, and you must vote to protect your precious lives and the future of our children."
