On May 23, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon sent a congratulatory message to Director Heo Kayoung, who won the first prize in the 'La Cinef' section at the 78th Cannes International Film Festival with the film 'A Wild Roomer', expressing his congratulations and encouragement.
Minister Yu stated, "'A Wild Roomer', which tells the story of an elderly woman reflecting on her life between life and death, family and love, resonated deeply with filmmakers around the world and demonstrated new possibilities for Korean cinema." He added, "This award is a remarkable achievement that brings great hope and inspiration to the Korean film industry and young filmmakers, who have faced difficulties since the COVID-19 pandemic."
He further encouraged, "I hope you will continue to create wonderful works that evoke empathy for the times with your shining passion, and become a new star in the Korean film industry."
'La Cinef' is one of the competitive sections of the Cannes International Film Festival, aimed at discovering the next generation of filmmakers by featuring short and medium-length films made by students from film schools around the world.
The Cannes Film Festival Executive Committee announced Director Heo Kayoung's 'A Wild Roomer' as the first prize winner at the 'La Cinef' awards ceremony held at the Bu?uel Theatre in Cannes, France, on May 22 (local time). 'A Wild Roomer' is a work that depicts the process of an elderly woman retracing her past life.
This year, 646 film schools from around the world submitted a total of 2,679 films to the La Cinef section, and the Cannes Film Festival Executive Committee officially invited 16 films and selected the winners. At the 78th Cannes International Film Festival, two Korean short films, 'A Wild Roomer' and 'Glasses' (Short Film Competition), were invited.
