Opening of a Smart Technology-Powered Safety Control Tower
Strengthening Real-Time Response System for Fires and Accidents
Aerial Patrols with Drones... Enhanced Facility Management
Samsung Heavy Industries has officially launched a smart integrated control system to manage safety and security in real time within its shipyard. The system is characterized by the introduction of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based CCTV, drones, and smart helmets in high-risk workplaces.
On May 23, Samsung Heavy Industries established an integrated control center at its Geoje Shipyard in South Gyeongsang Province and held an opening ceremony. The event was attended by Choi Seongan, CEO and Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy Industries, as well as Choi Wonyoung, Chairman of the Workers' Council. Officials from related organizations, including Kim Incheol, Director of the Tongyeong Branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and Jeong Jongdeuk, Director of the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, along with overseas shipowners, were also present.
The integrated control center, with an area of approximately 198 square meters, is located within the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) building. It consolidates previously dispersed safety and security functions and incorporates smart technologies based on AI and the Internet of Things (IoT). The center is operated with the goals of enabling rapid response to crisis situations, conducting cause analysis, and preventing accidents.
In particular, AI CCTV capable of automatically detecting ignition has been installed in areas with a high risk of fire, such as the painting factory. Mobile CCTV has been deployed in high-risk work zones, including offshore construction sites. In addition, drone patrols are conducted to regularly inspect key facilities for any abnormalities. In the event of an accident, the system allows for real-time verification of workers' information through smart helmets and is linked to medical facilities.
CEO Choi emphasized, "The integrated control center goes beyond being a place for simple CCTV monitoring and serves as the core infrastructure for smart safety and security. It will make a significant contribution to achieving zero accidents and zero disasters."
