A teacher in their 40s was found dead at a middle school in Jeju. The local education community and teachers' organizations have expressed their condolences and are calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.


According to the Jeju Dongbu Police Station, at approximately 12:46 a.m. on May 22, a teacher in their 40s, identified as Mr. A, was found dead in a storage room at a middle school in Jeju City. Previously, at 12:29 a.m., a missing person report had been filed for Mr. A. While searching the area around the school, police discovered Mr. A deceased in a storage room behind the main school building.


Mr. A was reportedly experiencing psychological distress due to a complaint from a student.


The police are currently investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the death.


The Jeju Provincial Office of Education is also conducting its own investigation by visiting the school.

The education community continues to express condolences for the deceased teacher. On this day, the Jeju branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) issued a statement of condolence, saying, "We mourn the teacher who tragically lost their life and offer our deepest condolences." The statement continued, "We call for a careful and thorough investigation into this incident," and urged authorities "to clarify the circumstances under which the educational conflicts and psychological burdens surrounding the deceased occurred."


Kim Kwangsu, Superintendent of the Jeju Provincial Office of Education, also released a statement, saying, "We mourn the teacher who devoted themselves to teaching children and sadly passed away, and offer our deepest condolences." He added, "We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family who must say farewell to their loved one, and also to the fellow teachers and students who lived and worked alongside the deceased."


He stated, "As the superintendent responsible for education in Jeju, I am deeply saddened that such an incident, which should never have happened, has occurred. I will do my utmost to ensure that such a tragic event is never repeated in our schools."


He further said, "To support the emotional well-being of teachers and students, we will do our best to provide emotional recovery support, and, when necessary, offer professional counseling and psychological therapy."
