Busan Transportation Corporation (President Lee Byungjin) was selected as the "Best Institution" in the "2024 Railroad Safety Management Level Evaluation" organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, achieving the highest score among 24 railroad operating institutions nationwide. As a result, the corporation received the designation certificate for "Best Railroad Safety Operator" and held a plaque unveiling ceremony.
The commemorative ceremony, held on the morning of May 22 at the corporation's headquarters in Beomcheon-dong, was attended by Jeong Euikyung, Director of Railroad Safety Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Lee Jongseok, Director of Railroad Safety at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. They presented the designation certificate and a commemorative plaque to President Lee Byungjin. Following this, a plaque unveiling ceremony was held to publicly announce the corporation's excellence in railroad safety management systems both internally and externally.
The Railroad Safety Management Level Evaluation is a national assessment conducted annually for all railroad operating institutions in Korea. It comprehensively diagnoses the overall safety management level, including implementation of safety management systems, organizational culture, accident indicators, and employee training. The evaluation aims to encourage voluntary safety management and promote a culture of railroad safety.
In this year's evaluation, the corporation received high marks across all areas, including a perfect score in accident indicators due to the reduction of railroad accidents and operational disruptions, investment in safety and discovery of outstanding policies, and safety maturity interviews with executives and employees. Notably, the corporation succeeded in achieving zero railroad accidents and disruptions in 2024, reducing the average number of incidents from 1.8 per year over the past five years to zero, which is recognized as a significant accomplishment.
Since President Lee Byungjin took office, the corporation has aimed for "Zero Railroad Accidents and Operational Disruptions" by improving safety awareness throughout the organization. Efforts have included strengthening the capabilities of railroad workers, expanding safety personnel, establishing an integrated railroad wireless communication network (LTE-R), developing preventive measures for lithium battery fires, and expanding emergency response training, thereby building an effective foundation for safety management.
In addition, marking the 40th anniversary of the city subway's opening this year, the corporation launched a "Special Safety Management Task Force" to establish comprehensive safety measures and is accelerating the creation of a proactive, prevention-oriented safety management system by actively identifying and addressing hidden hazards.
Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, stated, "This selection as the best institution is a valuable achievement made possible by the efforts of all field employees," adding, "We will continue to actively introduce digital technologies such as AI, big data, and cloud computing into the safety sector to realize a smart railroad safety system that citizens can trust and use with confidence."
