MOU Signed on May 22
for Verification of Electric Vehicle Charging Robot Technology
Hyundai Motor and Kia are launching a demonstration project for the 'Automatic Charging Robot' for electric vehicles in partnership with Incheon International Airport Corporation.
On May 22, Hyundai Motor and Kia signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Incheon International Airport Corporation at the corporation's headquarters for the verification of AI-based electric vehicle automatic charging robot technology. The signing ceremony was attended by Heewon Yang, Head of Hyundai Kia R&D Division (President), and Hakjae Lee, President of Incheon International Airport Corporation.
Under this agreement, Hyundai Motor and Kia will collaborate with Incheon International Airport Corporation, which boasts the largest eco-friendly vehicle infrastructure in Korea, to provide an electric vehicle automatic charging robot service optimized for the airport environment.

Incheon International Airport has converted all of its on-site vehicles to eco-friendly vehicles and plans to install 1,110 electric vehicle chargers by 2026. This makes it an ideal location for utilizing the automatic charging robot service.
To conduct the demonstration project, Hyundai Motor and Kia's Robotics Lab will provide the electric vehicle automatic charging robot and software solutions, and will identify and implement service operation scenarios optimized for Incheon International Airport's operational environment.
Incheon International Airport Corporation will operate the electric vehicle automatic charging robot with its fleet of eco-friendly vehicles, verify its usability in real-world conditions, and collect and share feedback from airport corporation employees.
With this project, Hyundai Motor and Kia are expanding the scope of their electric vehicle automatic charging robot business to airport facilities, which are designated as the highest-level national security zones and require a high degree of safety and efficient operation, building on their previous experience with demonstration projects.
Yang said, "Hyundai Motor and Kia will provide users with a more convenient and enhanced mobility experience through customized automatic charging solutions that can be used without restrictions in any environment. Together with Incheon International Airport, we will build a variety of future mobility infrastructures and contribute to leading the future mobility ecosystem."
Lee responded, "This business agreement is expected to improve passenger services and enhance operational efficiency at Incheon Airport. Moving forward, Incheon Airport will continue to evolve into a world-class digital airport based on its outstanding infrastructure and technological capabilities."
The electric vehicle automatic charging robot developed by Hyundai Motor and Kia is a single-arm robot that picks up the charger, connects it to the vehicle's charging port to begin charging, and returns the charger to its original position once charging is complete. The robot features a 3D camera-based AI algorithm that allows it to accurately recognize the charging port and connect the charger. Last year, it obtained KC certification, Korea's domestic quality assurance certification, and also met the European Union's safety requirements to acquire CE certification.
