A member of the Democratic Party who was expelled for impersonating a secretary to Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, was belatedly found to have previously impersonated a member of former President Yoon Suk-yeol's campaign team from the People Power Party.
According to Gwangju Seobu Police Station on May 22, the police referred a man in his 30s, identified as A, to the prosecution without detention on April 16 on charges of violating the Minor Offenses Act by impersonating a publicity advisor to the People Power Party's Central Election Countermeasures Committee and other positions.
A is accused of visiting several local public institutions on May 3 and pretending to be a publicity advisor for the People Power Party to the staff there. Introducing himself as a close aide to former President Yoon, A presented an appointment certificate that he claimed to have received from the People Power Party's election committee during the last presidential election, thereby deceiving the officials.
At other public institutions, A also impersonated a National Intelligence Service employee. However, investigations found that he did not demand money or use the impersonated identities to exercise any rights.
The appointment certificate used by A in his crimes was believed to be forged, but this could not be proven due to a lack of remaining records with the People Power Party.
During the police investigation, A reportedly admitted to the crime, stating that he thought using a certain identity or position would help him expand his personal network.
Meanwhile, A, who is a member of the Democratic Party, also called the secretariats of five district offices in Gwangju, impersonating a secretary to Lee Jae-myung and requesting a meeting with the candidate. For this, he was expelled by the Democratic Party's Gwangju City branch the previous day.
