On May 22, the Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) announced that it will create an "elevated park" in the space above the railway crossing the Yongsan International Business District, in cooperation with Korail.
SH Corporation has signed a contract for basic design services to construct a rail deck above the railway in the Yongsan International Business District, aiming to connect previously separated areas and establish a green pedestrian axis linking Yongsan and the Han River. This work will be carried out over a period of 18 months.
This "artificial rail deck construction project" is a key initiative to realize the "three-dimensional pedestrian green city," one of the four major strategies for the Yongsan International Business District. The project is expected to address the issue of urban disconnection caused by the railway and secure access to the Han River, thereby significantly improving the quality of life for Seoul residents.
The space above the railway will be developed as a complex green area, community plaza, and cultural and rest spaces, creating a place where citizens' daily lives and urban functions are naturally integrated.
In particular, SH Corporation plans to maintain a close cooperation system with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and railway-related organizations to ensure technical feasibility and work safety in the area where trains are in operation.
Hwang Sangha, President of SH Corporation, stated, "This rail deck project is a meaningful attempt to restore a city divided by the railway into a people-centered, open space," adding, "We will do our best to enhance the quality of life for citizens and strengthen Seoul's urban competitiveness by creating pedestrian-friendly green spaces."
