Full-scale Renovation Begins with 2 Billion KRW Support from the National Heritage Administration
Demolition of Landscape-Damaging Buildings and Facilities, and Improvement of Walkways
Taean Anheungjin Fortress and Namwon Eupseong Fortress will be remodeled and reborn as regional tourism hubs.
The National Heritage Administration announced on May 22 that it will provide 2 billion KRW in national funding for the improvement of Taean Anheungjin Fortress, Namwon Eupseong Fortress, and the Wando Cheonghaejin Historic Site, all of which have established basic landscape improvement plans. The project will focus not only on restoring the landscape but also on improving the living conditions of residents near the designated national heritage zones.
The main initiatives include: demolition of buildings and facilities that detract from the landscape; remodeling of buildings and facilities; maintenance of walls and roofs; improvement of pedestrian walkways; maintenance of parking lots and restrooms; creation of resident rest areas; installation of visitor convenience facilities; and maintenance of exploration trails. A representative from the National Heritage Administration stated, "We plan to establish a national heritage ecosystem that benefits both local residents and visitors."
The National Heritage Administration has been dedicated to this project since last year. Through a local government competition, five national heritage sites were selected, and each region received 200 million KRW to establish a basic landscape improvement plan. Recently, the Cultural Heritage Committee's Historic Sites Division approved the basic plans for Taean Anheungjin Fortress, Namwon Eupseong Fortress, and the Wando Cheonghaejin Historic Site, allowing the project to move forward in earnest.

Taean County will demolish the abandoned temporary restroom and tourist information center in front of the west gate of Anheungjin Fortress and will establish an integrated tourist information center and a Sarang Meeting Hall. Additionally, the county will secure additional parking and transform a long-abandoned nearby house into a rest area.
Namwon City will lay the foundation for the landscape improvement of Namwon Eupseong Fortress by starting with a city-led excavation survey of the Uichong site and the design of future maintenance projects. Wando County will focus on improving the living environment of villages near the Cheonghaejin Historic Site. The county will also maintain the Jangjwail Jikimgil Village Alley, Janggun Spring, and Suho's Maedan, ensuring the preservation of historical and traditional connections.
Other supported sites, such as Naju Eupseong Fortress and Yecheon Hoeryongpo, will begin landscape improvements as soon as their basic plans are established. A representative from the National Heritage Administration stated, "Based on the amended 'Act on the Preservation and Utilization of Cultural Heritage' in November last year, we are preparing guidelines to help local governments efficiently establish and implement resident support project plans."
