Barbecue Facility Installed in Public Parking Lot Voluntarily Removed After Controversy

City Urges Voluntary Removal by Owner... Structure Dismantled Last Weekend

An illegal temporary structure was installed in the parking lot of a riverside park in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, sparking controversy before it was recently dismantled. The city reportedly notified the citizen who installed the structure to voluntarily remove it.

According to Chungju City on May 19, a report was filed through the national civil complaint portal on April 26, stating that someone had installed a building with transparent glass windows in a waterfront area near the Danwol Riverside Swimming Area in Pungdong Dalcheon (a national river).

Upon inspection, the city found that the structure measured 6 meters wide, 2.5 meters deep, and 3 meters high, built with a steel frame and transparent materials. Inside, there were chairs and tables for dining.

The city determined that the installation violated the Building Act because the temporary structure was installed without obtaining permission to occupy the national river area. The city posted a corrective order notice on the structure to encourage the owner to remove it voluntarily, and the structure was dismantled last weekend.

A city official stated, "The Danwol Riverside Swimming Area, a popular camping spot, is notorious for 'Albakgi' cases, where people leave camping cars or tents in prime locations and abandon them. It appears that the structure was installed to be used as a resting place."

Meanwhile, the park's parking lot is also used by camping cars on weekends. As the area has become famous as a free destination for water activities and camping, it is struggling with long-term stay tents and caravans. Even when long-term tents and caravans are removed following citizen reports, new ones quickly take their place, creating a vicious cycle.
