A Cat Used as a Drug Courier Captured Near Prison
Plastic Bundle Wrapped Around Its Body Contained Marijuana and Cocaine
There was an incident in which inmates attempted to use a cat as a courier to smuggle drugs into a prison.
On May 19 (local time), foreign media outlets such as the Daily Mail reported, citing an announcement from the Costa Rican Ministry of Justice, that a cat attempting to smuggle drugs into Pococ? prison in the Lim?n region was apprehended. According to the announcement by the local Ministry of Justice, correctional officers at Pococ? prison spotted a cat wrapped in barbed wire on the prison wall on the night of the 6th. The officers immediately sounded the alarm and quickly rescued the cat. However, the rescued kitten had an unidentified plastic bundle tightly wrapped around its body.

After the correctional officers separated the plastic bag from the cat's body and examined it, they found 235.65g of marijuana and 67.76g of highly addictive crack cocaine for smoking inside. It is suspected that drug traffickers attempted to use the cat as a courier to deliver drugs to inmates. The correctional officers handed over the seized drugs to the police, and the rescued cat was transferred to the National Animal Health Service (SENASA) for treatment.
In addition, the Costa Rican Ministry of Justice revealed that they have discovered drug packages hidden in the soles of shoes, and that the introduction of X-ray scanners in the prison has so far led to the detection of 1,330kg of drugs concealed on bodies. Furthermore, as many as 30 public officials, including correctional officers with 10 years of experience, have also acted as drug couriers. In response, Costa Rican authorities emphasized that they will maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption. Previously, in the United Kingdom, there was an attempt to smuggle drugs into a prison using a drone, which was similar to the cat-assisted drug smuggling attempt in the Costa Rican prison, prompting authorities to devise countermeasures.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica serves as a logistics hub for Colombian and Panamanian drug traffickers targeting the US and European markets. Drug traffickers are collaborating with Costa Rican gangs to smuggle drugs into the United States and Europe. In particular, the port in the Lim?n region, where this incident occurred, is a major hub for drug trafficking, with a significant volume of drugs passing through this location on their way to Europe. At the port, drugs hidden in fruit export containers, such as those for bananas and pineapples, are frequently discovered.
