Court Upholds Prison Sentence in Appeal Trial for Husband of "Sock Donation Angel"
A civil servant in his 50s, known as the husband of the "Sock Donation Angel," has been sentenced to prison in his appeal trial for assaulting and stalking his wife.
According to Yonhap News Agency on May 20, the Incheon District Court Criminal Appeals Division 1-1 (Presiding Judge Lee Jeongmin) sentenced Mr. A (58), who was indicted on charges including inflicting injury and violating the Act on Punishment of Stalking Crimes, to two years in prison, the same sentence as in the first trial.
Last year, Mr. A was indicted and detained for assaulting his wife, Ms. B, who is also in her 50s, and for continuing to visit or threaten her with statements such as "I will kill you," even after being issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting contact and approach. Previously, Mr. A had been reported for assaulting Ms. B, and the police had issued a temporary restraining order against him.
Ms. B claimed that she had suffered prolonged assault and threats from Mr. A, and that she had sustained injuries including broken bones and a ruptured eardrum.
Ms. B has been known as the so-called "Sock Donation Angel," having been featured in the media several times for donating thousands of pairs of socks each year to neighbors in need. She has also been reported in the media for her consistent volunteer work at local senior centers and nursing homes.
The court stated, "The victim has provided specific and consistent testimony, which establishes that the defendant assaulted the victim," adding, "Upon reviewing the evidence lawfully admitted in the first trial, there is no indication that the initial judgment was significantly unjust."
Previously, in February, Mr. A filed an appeal with the Incheon District Court through his attorney, arguing that the sentence in the first trial was excessively harsh and therefore unfair.
