Kim Yongtae Proposes 'Spouses TV Debate'... Lee and Lee Flatly Reject

Kim Yongtae: "Let's Broadcast the Seol Nanyeong and Kim Hyekyung TV Debate Live"
Lee Jaemyung: "Impulsive, Irresponsible, and Lacking Any Plan"
Lee Joonseok: "If Kim Yongtae Had Been in Front of Me, He Would Have Been Severely Scolded"

Kim Yongtae, the emergency committee chair of the People Power Party, proposed a "presidential candidate spouses TV debate," but Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, immediately rejected the idea. Lee Joonseok, the presidential candidate of the Reform New Party, also strongly objected, calling it "a waste of time."

On this day, Lee Jaemyung met with reporters before a campaign event in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, and drew a clear line regarding the People Power Party's proposal for a "spouses debate," saying, "Does that even make sense?" He added, "We must not turn the sacred arena of sovereignty into a mere event or a joke," and criticized the proposal as "impulsive, irresponsible, and lacking any plan." Addressing Kim Yongtae, he raised his voice, saying, "Please speak in a manner befitting your position."

Lee Joonseok, after finishing a "Let's Eat at the University Cafeteria" event at Chonnam National University in Gwangju, criticized Kim Yongtae's proposal for a "spouses TV debate," saying, "I really wish people would stop making such jokes."

Earlier in the day, after a meeting with local journalists at Gwangju City Hall, Lee Joonseok told reporters, "If Kim Yongtae had been in front of me, I would have scolded him severely." He added, "People in the People Power Party really need to come up with strategies to win the election," and criticized, "I don't understand how they think they can win by making these kinds of meaningless statements."

Lee Joonseok continued, "How can wasting more time, with less than two weeks left until the presidential election, be considered a strategy?" He directly criticized the People Power Party, saying, "If you can't come up with your own tactics, you should at least hire a consultant."

Earlier, Kim Yongtae held an emergency press conference at the National Assembly and proposed a TV debate between Seol Nanyeong, the spouse of Kim Moonsu, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, and Kim Hye-kyung, the spouse of Lee Jaemyung. Kim Yongtae stated, "We have sufficiently communicated with Kim Moonsu's side at the campaign committee level," and "We respectfully request that Lee Jaemyung's side clarify their position by May 23."

Kim Moonsu also met with reporters at the Korea Artists Center in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, and said, "This was not my idea," but insisted, "While vetting the candidate is fundamental, the public also has the right to know about the spouses and families." He added, "The intention is that voting with more information leads to a more accurate vote," thus supporting Kim Yongtae's proposal.
