Compensation to Be Paid to 49,232 Residents in Suwon Airfield Noise-Affected Areas

Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will provide military noise compensation payments to 49,232 residents living in the noise-affected areas near Suwon Airfield (K-13) by the end of August.

On May 20, Suwon City announced that, in accordance with the 'Military Noise Compensation Act,' it had decided to accept compensation applications from residents (including foreigners) who were registered and lived in noise-affected areas last year, as well as from those who lived in these areas but did not apply for compensation between November 27, 2020, and December 2023.

Previously, on May 8 and 9, Suwon City held the '2025 1st Suwon City Regional Noise Countermeasure Review Committee' meeting to determine the eligible recipients and compensation amounts.

The amount of compensation will be paid differently to each individual, based on the type of noise-affected area and by applying reduction criteria such as the time of moving in, workplace location, period of military service, and overseas stays. Applications from residents who did not reside in the noise-affected area during the compensation period were excluded from eligibility.

Suwon City plans to individually notify the recipients of the compensation amounts determined by the regional review committee by the end of this month. Those who agree to receive text messages can check the determined amount via 'two-way text.' For citizens who have difficulty receiving text messages or do not consent to receive them, separate notifications will be sent by registered mail. Recipients or their representatives can also visit City Hall with identification to collect the payment in person.

Citizens who wish to appeal the determined compensation amount may submit an objection from June 1 to July 30. For those who agree with the initially determined amount, compensation will be paid at the end of August.

Citizens who were unable to apply for compensation this year may submit retroactive applications for unclaimed amounts during the next military noise compensation application period (January to February) next year.

A Suwon City official stated, "We will continue to propose to the Ministry of National Defense to expand compensation coverage and ease reduction criteria so that residents suffering from military noise damage can receive compensation."
