Gyeonggi Province is launching the "Read 1,000 Books Project" for children.
On May 20, Gyeonggi Province announced that, in collaboration with public libraries in 14 cities and counties within the province, it will implement the "Read 1,000 Books for Children" initiative (1000 Book Expedition) as part of the Gyeonggi Lifelong Reading Project. The aim is to improve children's literacy and foster reading habits.
Giheung Library and Dongcheon Library in Yongin will each run their own programs, "1,000 Books Dream" and "Step-by-Step Children's Book Bag," and will produce and distribute sticker books, stamp books, and a list of recommended books for the 1,000 Books for Children initiative. Janggi Library in Gimpo will promote children's reading through the "1,000 Stories to Share" bookshelf and book curation programs.
Public libraries in Guri, Bucheon, Anyang, Yangju, Uiwang, Paju, Pyeongtaek, and Hwaseong will create book bundles to support step-by-step reading. Libraries in Anseong, Yeoju, Icheon, and Yangpyeong will continue to run their own 1,000 Books Project this year, following last year's program. Detailed information on each city's and county's specific operations can be found on the respective public library websites.
Park Mingyeong, Director of Library Policy at Gyeonggi Province, said, "We will continue to expand participation to more cities and counties so that every child in Gyeonggi Province can develop lifelong reading habits."
