Seongdong District to Conduct Intensive Weekend Inspections of No-Smoking and No-Drinking Zones

Seongdong District in Seoul (District Mayor Jung Wonoh) will conduct intensive weekend inspections of no-smoking and no-drinking zones from May to October in order to protect residents' health and create a clean urban environment.

This initiative aims not only to enforce regulations, but also to encourage residents to voluntarily enhance their sense of compliance in public spaces and to establish a mature civic culture so that everyone can enjoy a clean and pleasant environment.

The inspections will mainly focus on areas where complaints about secondhand smoke are frequent and on the four Children's Dream Parks (Miso, Oksu, Majang, Haengdang), which are popular among families with children.

The intensive inspections will take place every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with inspection teams organized in pairs of two people.

The main inspection items include on-site guidance and warnings regarding smoking in no-smoking zones, monitoring of drinking in no-drinking zones, and advance notice of fines for violations of relevant laws and regulations.

In addition, since August last year, Seongdong District became the first in Seoul to designate all 46 public restrooms as no-smoking zones. Since January, a fine of 100,000 won has been imposed for smoking in these areas. To protect infants and children, the number of Children's Dream Parks designated as no-drinking parks has been expanded from two to four, as these parks are frequently used by families.

Jung Wonoh, Mayor of Seongdong District, stated, "Through intensive weekend inspections, we aim to raise awareness about indiscriminate smoking and drinking and to prevent the harm caused by secondhand smoke. Seongdong District will make even greater efforts to create a pleasant urban environment where everyone can feel safe."
