Park Sugeun's "Girl Carrying a Baby" (1964) will be featured in the May K Auction sale.
K Auction will hold an auction on May 28 at 4:00 p.m. at its headquarters in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, presenting 112 works with a total estimated value of 13.1 billion won. This auction will feature works by masters who have shaped major currents in art history, numerous Joseon-era white porcelain pieces, paintings of significant art historical value, and calligraphy pieces of high documentary importance.
Park Sugeun's "Girl Carrying a Baby" is a piece that simply depicts ordinary people and daily life on a rough, textured surface. It fully embodies Park Sugeun's unique artistic style and is considered one of the most accomplished works among the "Girl Carrying a Baby" series, clearly showcasing his distinctive visual language. While the estimated price is available upon request, bidding is set to start at 750 million won.
Other notable works by renowned artists will also be featured. These include Kim Tschangyeul, who created infinite spaces for contemplation through water droplets; Chang Ucchin, who captured the essence of nature and humanity with a childlike perspective using simplified forms and subdued colors; Park Seobo, who emphasized discipline and spirituality through repeated lines; and Yayoi Kusama, whose dot patterns and vivid colors symbolize repetition, infinity, and her own healing process.
Contemporary art pieces that reject fixed frameworks and conventions, presenting each artist's individual visual language, will also be on display. George Condo explores the complexity of human psychology through distorted portraits, while Harold Ancart seeks new possibilities in color and form through sculptural experimentation. Jason Boyd Kinsella visualizes the essence of emotion using bold colors and symbolism, and Simon Fujiwara raises questions about identity and cultural codes in modern society. Wooguen delves into pure emotion and inner human symbolism, expressing images reminiscent of children's doodles with vivid colors and a sense of fairy-tale imagination. Jung Youngjoo captures feelings of longing for disappearing things and memories of warm light on canvas through techniques of layering and painting over hanji paper.
In the Korean painting and antique art section, works will include Joseon-era white porcelain and porcelain jars, paintings by Cheongjeon Lee Sangbeom, Idang Kim Eunho, and Sojeong Byun Gwansik that reflect the aesthetics and painting styles of their times, as well as calligraphy pieces by Chusa Kim Jeonghee, Park Jeonghee, and Soegwi Shin Youngbok, who express their artistic worlds through the form of written characters.
A preview of the auction works will be held at the K Auction exhibition hall until the auction date, May 28. It is free and open to everyone without reservation.
