The Yangsan City Citizen Participation Group for Gender-Friendly Cities in Gyeongnam is conducting safety monitoring activities for women's safe routes home and safe zones every Thursday in May. This initiative, part of efforts to create a gender-friendly city, aims to ensure the safe passage of citizens at night and to prevent crime.
On May 15, the Citizen Participation Group began its activities in residential areas and alleyways in Jungang-dong, where low lighting has raised safety concerns. The monitoring started from the entrance of Yangsan Elementary School to Hashingi Village and in the residential area behind Nambu Market. The group also plans to conduct monitoring along the road near Samsung Police Box to Samsung Elementary School in Samsung-dong, and from Deokgye Daechunamu Oriental Clinic to Seonwoo 2nd Apartment in the Ungsang area.
The monitoring will focus on areas with high nighttime pedestrian traffic among the 10 designated safe routes home and 6 safe zones established since 2020. The group will discuss the placement of crime prevention safety facilities such as pavement markings, solar markers, emergency bells, and logo projectors. They will also inspect the safety infrastructure of women's safe routes home and safe zones, and check for any malfunctions of installed security devices.
This activity is expected to help alleviate anxiety during nighttime travel, enable rapid response in emergencies, and contribute not only to crime prevention but also to creating a safer living environment for women and other socially vulnerable groups.
Lee Seongmi, head of the Women and Youth Division, stated, "We will do our utmost to create a gender-friendly city that prioritizes the safety and happiness of citizens by continuously monitoring sites, improving facilities, and pursuing additional women's safety projects in the future, so that women and citizens can return home with peace of mind."
