The decision on whether to detain a group of individuals who allegedly attempted to extort money by claiming that they were pregnant with the child of Son Heungmin, the 33-year-old captain of the national soccer team and a player for Tottenham Hotspur, could be made as early as May 17.

On this day at 2:00 p.m., Judge Yoon Wonmook of the Seoul Central District Court will hold a pre-trial detention hearing for Yang, a woman in her 20s who is accused of extortion, and Yoon, a man in his 40s who is accused of attempted extortion.

Yang is accused of sending a fetal ultrasound image in June of last year and extorting over 300 million won by threatening to reveal the pregnancy. It is reported that Yang wrote a memorandum stating that she would not disclose the pregnancy to the public.

Yoon is accused of approaching Son's side in March of this year and attempting to receive 70 million won, but failed. He is reported to have committed the crime after learning belatedly about the threats while dating Yang.

The Gangnam Police Station, which received Son's complaint on May 7, arrested the suspects and applied for their detention warrants. Immediately after the arrests, the police seized their mobile phones and are currently investigating the authenticity of the ultrasound images and other facts based on the confiscated devices.
