Securing 'One Station, One Accessible Route'
...Enhancing User Convenience
Gwangju Transportation Corporation (President Cho Ikmun) announced on the 16th that it has recently begun the design service for installing a ground-level elevator at Yangdong Market Station in Seo-gu, and will work to secure a 'one station, one accessible route' across the entire Line 1 of the urban railway.
'One station, one accessible route' refers to a station equipped with a route that allows transportation-vulnerable individuals, such as people with disabilities or pregnant women, to move from ground level to the platform without assistance from others. Since the opening of Line 1, the corporation has achieved a 95% accessibility rate by completing the installation of ground-level elevators at all stations except Yangdong Market Station.
This project is being carried out with the active policy support and promotion by the city of Gwangju to guarantee the mobility rights of transportation-vulnerable individuals. The design service will proceed until September, with the goal of completing construction by April next year.
Once the elevator installation at Yangdong Market Station is completed, the corporation will achieve 100% coverage of the 'one station, one accessible route' initiative. This is expected to not only improve convenience for urban railway users but also increase the number of visitors to Yangdong Market and help revitalize the local economy.
President Cho Ikmun said, "I would like to thank the city of Gwangju for its efforts to promote customized policies for the transportation-vulnerable despite difficult financial conditions," adding, "We will do our best to minimize inconvenience to citizens and ensure safety during the construction period."
