First Meeting at the National Assembly After Assuming Acting Presidency
On May 15, National Assembly Speaker Woo Wonsik met with Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Lee Juho at the National Assembly and requested that the government ensure the utmost fairness in managing the 6·3 early presidential election, which is now only 19 days away.
This was the first meeting between Speaker Woo and Acting President Lee since Lee assumed the acting role on May 2.
At the meeting, Speaker Woo noted that overseas voting will take place next week and asked the government to make every effort to prevent illegal activities during the remaining election period, as well as to ensure that public officials maintain political neutrality.
Acting President Lee responded by saying, "We will do our utmost to ensure that this election is conducted fairly and cleanly, so that the presidential election can serve as an opportunity for national unity."
Speaker Woo also emphasized that, in light of threats of terrorism against presidential candidates, the government should actively consider providing support to candidates' camps if requested.
Acting President Lee stated, "I have been informed that the police have been responding well so far, but since such incidents must never occur, we will thoroughly review whether there is anything further needed to strengthen the protection of candidates and take all necessary precautions."
