Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, will visit Gwangju Metropolitan City on May 16, ahead of the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.
On this day, Governor Kim plans to visit the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery located in Buk-gu, Gwangju, in the afternoon, and lay flowers at the graves of martyrs from Gyeonggi Province, including Choi Sangpil, as well as at the grave of student martyr Moon Jaehak.
Choi Sangpil was taken by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency on charges of producing a collection of lectures by Kim Daejung and endured prolonged suffering, including torture and beatings. Moon Jaehak is known as the real-life figure who inspired the character 'Dongho', the protagonist of author Han Kang's novel "Human Acts".
Since taking office as Governor of Gyeonggi Province in 2022, Governor Kim has visited the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery every year to pay his respects. Notably, last year, he conducted a joint memorial visit with more than 30 key officials, including the First and Second Vice Governors for Administration and the Vice Governor for Economy, as well as major executives and heads of agencies, to honor and carry on the spirit of May 18 throughout Gyeonggi Province.
