The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute announced on May 15 that Dr. Cheolhwa Song of the Reactor System Safety Research Division has been selected as a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) this year.
The title of Fellow of the American Nuclear Society is awarded to individuals who have achieved original research accomplishments in the field of nuclear science and technology and have demonstrated leadership in academia and industry, thereby contributing to technological advancement.
This year, following a recommendation from existing Fellows in November of last year, the selection was finalized after a peer review by the ANS Honors and Awards Committee and approval by the Board of Directors.
Dr. Song was selected as a Fellow in recognition of his leadership in research and development and higher education in the nuclear field over the past 40 years, particularly his pioneering work in the development of new reactors and research to enhance safety.
Dr. Song joined the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in 1985 and, in recognition of his research achievements, is currently serving as a tenured researcher. He has also served as a professor at the University of Science and Technology (UST) for 17 years, mentoring numerous master's and doctoral researchers.
Externally, he has been active in organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency under the OECD (OECD/NEA). He has also served as a member of the International Committee and as chair of the Thermal Hydraulics Division within the American Nuclear Society.
Currently, he is contributing to raising the international standing of Korean science and technology by serving as a member of the Executive Committee and the Program Committee.
This year, six individuals from U.S. national laboratories, academia, and industry were selected as ANS Fellows. Among them, Dr. Song is the only foreign recipient. Notably, this is the first time that a researcher who earned their degree and has been active in Korea has been selected as a Fellow.
The award ceremony will be held at the opening session of the '2025 American Nuclear Society Annual Meeting' in Chicago, United States, on June 16.
Dr. Song stated, "It is a great honor to be selected as a Fellow," and expressed his deep gratitude to the institute and fellow researchers who have supported his international activities.
