Jungnang-gu Astronomy Science Center Construction Moves Forward After Passing Seoul Urban Park Committee Review

The "Astronomy Science Center" construction project, promoted by Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi), has laid the groundwork for full-scale implementation after passing the final review at the 3rd Seoul Metropolitan City Urban Park Committee meeting held on April 22.

This approval marks the completion of major administrative procedures, including the decision (and amendment) of the park development plan and landscape review for the Astronomy Science Center. The district plans to begin construction in 2026 and complete the project by 2027.

The Astronomy Science Center will be built on the site of the children's playground within Yongma Waterfall Park, located at 1316-8 Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu. The facility will be three stories above ground, with a total floor area of 1,275.62 square meters.

The main facilities will include an astronomical observation room, a planetarium, an education and experience (exhibition) room, and a lecture room. The center is designed to function both as a space for scientific and cultural experiences and as an educational resource.

Previously, the district selected the winning design through a design competition in November last year and is currently proceeding with the basic and detailed designs for the center. As the first specialized astronomy science facility in the region, the Astronomy Science Center is expected to become a leading educational and cultural facility in Jungnang-gu, providing opportunities for youth and residents to experience science in their daily lives.

This project is one of the core initiatives aimed at advancing Jungnang-gu as an "educational city." The district has already expanded its educational infrastructure by establishing the Bang Jeonghwan Education Support Center, the Jungnang Myeonmok and Yangwon Media Centers, and the Youth Culture and Arts Creation Center.

In November, the district also plans to open the second Bang Jeonghwan Education Support Center, which will focus on science education.

Additionally, the district is continuously working to improve the educational environment by increasing the education expense subsidies for kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools from 12 billion KRW in 2024 to 14 billion KRW this year.

Ryu Gyeonggi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, stated, "The Jungnang-gu Astronomy Science Center will play an important role in nurturing curiosity about space and science among youth and residents, and in fostering future scientific talent. We will do our utmost to ensure the successful construction of the Astronomy Science Center without any setbacks."
