A free haircut and beauty salon has opened inside a Gwangju Metro station. Gwangju Transportation Corporation (President Cho Ikmoon) announced on May 14 that it launched the "Subway Free Haircut Salon" in collaboration with the Healing Beauty Volunteer Group at Dosan Station in Gwangsan District on May 13, beginning to offer hairdressing services such as haircuts.
The "Free Haircut Salon" is recognized as one of the flagship welfare services of Gwangju Metro. After opening its first location at Geumnamno 4-ga Station in 2006, it received such a positive response from citizens that a second branch was established at Dosan Station just two years later. Even after the operation of the first location was suspended in 2022 due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the service continued to benefit citizens, recording around 260 users annually.
The free service is available to those aged 65 or older, basic livelihood security recipients, and people with disabilities. Eligible users must present identification that verifies their status. The salon will continue to offer simple hairdressing services as a volunteer activity for two hours every second Tuesday morning of each month.
Kim Geumja, president of the Healing Beauty Volunteer Group, said, "I am pleased to be able to practice neighborly love in the subway, which serves as a welfare facility for citizens," and added, "We will carry out volunteer activities that not only care for people's hair but also touch their hearts."
Cho Ikmoon, president of Gwangju Transportation Corporation, stated, "I sincerely thank the volunteers who have worked hard to provide free hairdressing services at the subway station," and emphasized, "We will do our best to ensure that the metro becomes not just a means of transportation but a space for citizen happiness."
