Anseong City to Take Preemptive Action Against Ground Subsidence ... 100km of Major Roads to Undergo GPR Survey

Mayor Kim Urges, "Do Your Best in Managing Underground Facilities"

Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province will conduct precision surveys on 100 kilometers of major roads within its jurisdiction in the second half of the year to prevent ground subsidence accidents.

On May 13, Anseong City announced that it had held the '2nd Emergency Special Safety Measures Meeting for Ground Subsidence Prevention' at the city hall disaster situation room, presided over by Mayor Bora Kim. The meeting was attended by relevant departments and related agencies, including Korea Water Resources Corporation, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Samchully, and Korea Expressway Corporation. At the meeting, the city decided to implement this plan.

During the meeting, the city discussed strengthening inspections of underground facilities and introducing scientific exploration techniques to detect risk factors at an early stage.

Starting in the second half of this year, the city plans to use national and provincial funds to conduct ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys over a total of 100 kilometers, focusing on densely populated areas and major roads with heavy traffic.

This technology is known to be effective in preventing ground subsidence, as it can non-destructively check the condition of underground pipelines and detect the presence of voids. The city expects that scientific investigation methods and systematic inspections will help block the risk of ground subsidence in advance, thereby significantly reducing the accident rate.

At the meeting, Mayor Kim also called for prompt inspection and replacement of aging water supply and sewage pipelines, which are considered the main cause of ground subsidence. Mayor Kim urged, "In light of the recent series of ground subsidence accidents in Korea, please do your utmost to manage underground facilities so that citizens do not feel anxious."
