Cultural Diversity Week Begins on the 21st... Forum Marks 20th Anniversary of UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on May 14 that, together with the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service and regional cultural foundations, it will hold the '2025 Cultural Diversity Week' from May 21 to 27.


Every year, May 21 is designated by the United Nations as the 'World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.' Since 2015, the government has been operating Cultural Diversity Week for one week starting on the World Day for Cultural Diversity, in order to enhance public understanding of cultural diversity.

At the National Museum of Korea, from May 23 to 25, there will be an 'Archiving Exhibition' to mark the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. In addition, an exhibition of cultural diversity-related films, books, and music recommended by 10 'special curators' selected from various fields will be held, along with the 'D: Stage,' which provides opportunities for communication with these curators. ▲ On May 23 at 1:00 p.m., the event will begin with a performance by the Shin Yujin Band and a talk concert featuring singer Lee Sangsoon. ▲ On May 24 at 2:00 p.m., Turkish journalist Alpago Sinasi and film director Kim Minju will participate. ▲ On May 25 at 2:00 p.m., poet Na Taejoo and artist Yang Jungwook will engage in discussions on the theme of cultural diversity with participants.


On May 23 at 2:00 p.m., a forum will be held at the National Museum of Korea under the theme 'Diversity of Cultural Expressions in the Era of Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Transformation,' commemorating the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Vice Minister Yong Hosung of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will attend and deliver congratulatory remarks for the 20th anniversary of the convention.


The forum will begin with a keynote presentation by Professor Kim Junghan of Seoul National University, who is a member of the UNESCO Digital and AI Review Group. This will be followed by case presentations in the areas of 'Business × Art' (Kim Taeyoon, Manager at Hyundai Motor Group ZER01NE), 'Storytelling × Creation' (Min Jieun, writer of the drama Investigation Couple), 'AI × Film' (Lee Jin-ho, producer at AI Film Art in the World), and 'AI × Cultural Content' (Baek Hyunjung, Head of AI Business Promotion Team at CJ ENM). Afterwards, a comprehensive discussion moderated by Professor Lee Jinjun of KAIST will be held on the topic 'Diversity of Cultural Expressions: Limitations and Future Possibilities.'


The '2025 Cultural Diversity Week' events are free of charge and anyone can attend by making an online reservation or registering on-site, on a first-come, first-served basis. Detailed information is available on the official website and social media channels.


Vice Minister Yong Hosung stated, "In our daily lives, we encounter people from different cultural backgrounds who live in diverse ways?across generations, genders, races, nationalities, languages, religions, and customs. Therefore, the value of cultural diversity, which recognizes and embraces differences, is extremely important." He added, "I hope that through this 'Cultural Diversity Week,' we can respect each other's differences and connect our hearts through culture."
