The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on May 12 that the 3rd ROK-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Military Staff Talks will be held in Seoul. The ROK-NATO Military Staff Talks are a regular meeting at the general officer (major general) level, aimed at enhancing mutual understanding of security situations on the Korean Peninsula and in Europe, as well as strengthening military cooperation between the ROK and NATO.
This year's meeting will be attended by Kwon Youngmin, Director of Strategic Planning at the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Air Force Major General), and Eray Winguyder, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Cooperative Security (Turkish Army Brigadier General), as the heads of each delegation. The discussions will focus on sharing security assessments of the Korean Peninsula, understanding NATO's cooperative security, evaluating the achievements of bilateral cooperation, and discussing future directions, all aimed at strengthening mutual military exchange and cooperation.
In particular, both sides are expected to express concern over the enhancement and modernization of North Korea's military capabilities resulting from expanded Russia-North Korea cooperation. They will also reaffirm their shared recognition that North Korea's threats pose a serious danger not only to the Korean Peninsula but also globally, and will emphasize the need for a coordinated response from the international community.
Deputy Assistant Secretary General Eray stated, "This meeting, being the second to be held in Korea, is a meaningful opportunity to witness Korea's commitment to military cooperation with NATO."
Meanwhile, the 4th ROK-NATO Military Staff Talks are scheduled to be held in Brussels next year.
