A Special Reunion on Teacher's Day, May 11
Reflecting on the Value of Respecting Teachers' Authority with Former Elementary School Teachers
"It is thanks to the teachings and encouragement of my teachers, who never spared their love and dedication for their students even in difficult times, that I have been able to come this far."
On May 11, Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Chung Geunsik made these remarks after meeting with his former elementary school teachers, Chae Eungmuk (94), Ko Seokjo (97), and Park Gongyeol (97), in celebration of Teacher's Day.
Superintendent Chung visited his alma mater, Hwangdeung Elementary School in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, and reminisced about his childhood with the three elderly teachers. Ko Jongyeong (68), a childhood friend of Superintendent Chung from Hwangdeung Elementary School, recalled, "Superintendent Chung valued promises with friends from a young age," and added, "He also showed perseverance by not giving up and solving difficult problems with determination." He went on to say, "I hope the warmth Superintendent Chung shows by visiting his former teachers out of gratitude will be reflected in Seoul's education, so that a happy educational community where everyone is respected can be created."
Superintendent Chung also shared his thoughts on the recent issue of protecting teachers' rights.
He stated, "Protecting teachers' rights means restoring teachers' rights, authority, and dignity," and added, "Only when teachers' rights are firmly established can schools be properly run."
He continued, "I am grateful to all the teachers who, even during difficult times, quietly remain at the forefront of education out of love for their students and work hard for the growth of children," and pledged, "The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will do its utmost to further strengthen and support teachers' rights so that teachers can focus solely on educational activities."
The former teachers advised Superintendent Chung, "Listen carefully to the voices from the field to ensure children grow up properly, and spare no effort in providing all necessary support so that teachers can devote themselves fully to educational activities."
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "We will strive to create an environment where teachers are respected and can focus solely on education."
