The Seorak·Manhae Thought Practice Promotion Association announced on May 11 that novelist Kwon Yeoseon (60) has been selected as the recipient of the 2nd Musan Cultural Award in the literature category.
According to the foundation, Kwon Yeoseon received praise from the judges for her "literary achievements, as a novelist who, while gazing into painful memories, never lets go of the threads of compassion and empathy."
Kwon Yeoseon made her literary debut in 1996 by winning the 2nd Imagination Literature Award for her novel "Pureureun Teumsae." She has published short story collections such as "Cheonyeochima" (2004), "The Time of Pink Ribbon" (2007), "The Red Fruit in My Garden" (2010), "The Forest of Torreya Trees" (2013), "Goodbye, Drunkard" (2016), "Still Far Away" (2020), and "Each Season" (2023), as well as novels including "Pureureun Teumsae" (1996), "Legato" (2012), "The House of Clay Figurines" (2014), and "Lemon" (2019).
In the arts category, cellist Sungwon Yang (58) was selected as the winner, while in the social and cultural category, the Lee Taeseok Foundation was chosen as the recipient.
The foundation praised cellist Yang for demonstrating exceptional musical depth, taking the lead in promoting the value of Korean culture and arts to the world, and delivering cultural exchange and artistic inspiration to the public through music.
Yang studied at the Conservatoire National Sup?rieur de Musique de Paris and Indiana University. He has performed on world stages such as the Musikverein in Austria, Salle Pleyel in Paris, and Carnegie Hall in New York, earning acclaim from both audiences and critics. He is currently a professor at the College of Music at Yonsei University and serves as a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in the United Kingdom, dedicating himself to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
Regarding the Lee Taeseok Foundation, the foundation stated, "We highly value the achievements of its various volunteer activities and support projects, which have spread the spirit of mutual prosperity and the noble meaning of sharing, and have expanded into a collective effort to resolve humanitarian crises."
The Lee Taeseok Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2012 to carry on the legacy of Dr. Lee Taeseok (1962-2010), a priest and doctor who was dispatched as a missionary to Tonj, South Sudan, where he devoted himself to relief, medical, and volunteer work before passing away from cancer. The foundation conducts humanitarian activities worldwide, including medical service, education, and poverty eradication.
The awards ceremony will be held at 5:00 p.m. on May 30 at the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Seoul, and each awardee will receive a prize of 100 million won.
