Gwangju Transportation Corporation (President Cho Ikmun) announced on May 11 that it will offer free rides on the Gwangju Urban Railroad for two days, May 17 and 18, in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

During this period, passengers using the Gwangju Urban Railroad will have their fares set to zero even if they tap their transportation cards at the gates as usual. Passengers who do not use transportation cards can receive a complimentary ticket at each station’s customer service center to board for free.

The corporation expects that this free ride initiative will greatly enhance convenience for citizens visiting “May historic sites” such as the May 18 Democracy Plaza and the Geumnam-ro area. It is also anticipated to significantly contribute to building a broad civic consensus for carrying on the Gwangju spirit. The free ride program applies to city buses and the urban railroad in Gwangju, but does not include village buses or Jeonnam rural buses.

President Cho Ikmun stated, “During the free ride period, we will do our utmost to manage the sites by deploying emergency support staff at major stations to ensure citizen safety,” and added, “I hope this May will be a time when all Gwangju citizens come together as one.”
