Representative Park Daechul Appointed as Secretary General...
Preparations Begin for Election Committee Formation
Injunction Withdrawn Following Party Member Vote Results
Kim Moonsoo, the People Power Party presidential candidate, and former Prime Minister Han Deoksu met on the 11th to discuss ways to cooperate. Amid the party leadership's consideration of replacing its candidate, the two, whose candidacies nearly crossed paths, reaffirmed their commitment to work together with an embrace.
On the morning of May 11, after completing his registration as a candidate at the Central Election Commission in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, Kim immediately met with former Prime Minister Han.
Former Prime Minister Han stated, "Our country is truly facing a crisis as precarious as a pile of eggs, and especially, there are tremendous actions being taken with the intent to nearly dismantle the judiciary. I ask that, in this election, we unite under candidate Kim's excellent leadership to overcome the national crisis and achieve victory over those seeking to undermine the fundamental system of our nation." He added, "I will do what I can."
In response, Kim said, "While I may be able to run a good campaign, in terms of state administration and national unity, former Prime Minister Han is my senior in every respect. I will learn from him and work hard so that the economy can rebound quickly. I will regard him as my mentor from now on." Kim then immediately requested, "Since you said you would do what you can, I would like you to serve as the head of the election committee." Han replied, "I will do what I can, but I think it would be best to discuss whether that is appropriate in practical terms."
Kim withdrew his request for a court injunction to suspend the effect of his disqualification as the presidential candidate, which he had filed with the Seoul Southern District Court. This is because, after the party member vote rejected the proposal to select former Prime Minister Han as the presidential candidate, Kim automatically regained his eligibility. In a statement, he explained, "With the results of the party member vote yesterday, my status and authority as the presidential candidate have been restored, so there is no longer any practical benefit to the injunction. Therefore, I withdrew the application at 9:30 a.m. today."
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Kim has nominated Representative Park Daechul as secretary general, who will oversee the entire presidential campaign.
